Kamal M. Khanna, PhDI studied Biological Sciences at Youngstown State University, OH, graduating in 1997. Following, I continued in the Biology/Immunology Master's program, studying under Dr. Diana Fagan. My Master's thesis involved identifying potential biomarkers for trauma patients that subsequently develop Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), leading to discovering a definitive correlations between increased expression of adhesion molecules on neutrophils and T cells and the probability of developing ARDS. Following my Masters training, I continued my PhD graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh, PA, studying under Dr. Robert Hendricks, with my PhD thesis focused on understanding the CD8 T cell immune response during acute and latent Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) infection.
Upon completion of my graduate work, I came to UConn Health as a postdoctoral scholar in Dr. Leo Lefrancois' Lab and centered on understanding CD8 T cell immune response to infection and intra-vital imaging to analyze the "rules" for driving a productive versus a non-productive immune response using MHC class 1 tetrameric complexes with whole organ staining to image the endogenous primary and memory CD8 T cell response to bacterial infections. Since stating my own lab in 2009, my research included investigating the underlying mechanisms that mediate the trafficking patterns of immune cells in vivo following infection in lymphoid and non lymphoid tissue. However, my research area has since expanded to include host-pathogen interactions of tissue resident macrophages and cancer immunotherapy. |
